Jeep Wrangler Flag Mount: JL vs JK, Where It Bolts, and What Height You Need

Quick answer: Where a whip flag mounts on a Jeep Wrangler depends on which generation you have. On a 2019-and-newer JL, the mount bolts to the upper tailgate hinge. On a 2007–2018 JK, it bolts to the top two bolts of the spare tire carrier — or straight to the tailgate if you've pulled the carrier. Both use factory bolt holes, so nothing gets drilled. The part people get wrong is height: dune parks measure the flag from the ground, not the length of your pole. On a stock Wrangler the mount sits 44 inches up on a JL and 42 inches on a JK, so a mid-length pole clears more than most people expect.
First, know which Wrangler you have
This is the whole fitment question, and it takes five seconds:
JL — 2019 to present. The mount bolts directly to the upper tailgate hinge.
JK — 2007 through 2018. The mount bolts to the upper right two bolts of your spare tire carrier.
Both are factory holes. No drilling, no cutting, no modification, and stainless hardware is included with each. Both brackets are laser cut and CNC bent from aluminum, then powder coated textured black.
If you're not sure which you have, look at the front end. On a JL, the headlights push into the two outer grille slots, notching them, and the turn signals sit on the face of the front fender flares. On a JK, the grille slots run straight down uninterrupted, the turn signals sit under the headlights, and there's a chrome Jeep badge above the grille.
The JL mount does something the JK one doesn't
The JL mount has two 9/16" (14mm) mounting holes instead of one. That means you can run your whip flag and a CB antenna at the same time — or a flag and a single backup trail light — off one bracket. Spacers are included to keep the bracket from marking your paint.
The JK mount carries one accessory: a flag, an antenna, or a reverse trail light. The included spacers are there for use with the stock tire carrier. If you've removed your spare tire carrier, the bracket bolts directly to the tailgate instead — no adapter needed.
The height rule almost everyone gets wrong
Here's the mistake we hear most:
"The park says 10 feet, so I need a 10-foot pole."
You don't. The rule measures the tip of your flag from the ground — not the length of your pole. Your mount already sits several feet in the air, and every inch of that counts.
Height of your mount hole above the ground + pole length = your flag height
Measured on our own trucks, stock: the JL's tailgate hinge mount sits 44 inches off the ground, and the JK's tire carrier mount sits 42 inches. That gives you:
JL (2019+) — mount at 44"
57" Shortie → 8 ft 5 in. Clears 8 ft. Not enough for Silver Lake.
81" → 10 ft 5 in. Clears 8 ft and Silver Lake's 10 ft.
103" → 12 ft 3 in. Clears everything.
JK (2007–2018) — mount at 42"
57" Shortie → 8 ft 3 in. Clears 8 ft, but only by three inches.
81" → 10 ft 3 in. Clears 8 ft and Silver Lake's 10 ft.
103" → 12 ft 1 in. Clears everything.
Those are stock numbers. A lift and bigger tires raise them, and a bumper or roll-bar mount changes them completely. Run a tape from the ground to your mounting hole and add your pole length — it takes ten seconds and it's the only number that matters.
This is also why we don't sell poles by vehicle type. Pick your length from where your mount sits and where you ride — not from what you drive.
What each park actually requires
The rules vary more than people expect, and the flag itself is regulated, not just the height.
Glamis — Imperial Sand Dunes (BLM) 8 ft from the ground to the mast tip. Red or orange flag, minimum 6" × 12". Pennant, triangle, square or rectangle all allowed. The flag must sit within 10 inches of the tip of the mast.
Sand Hollow (Utah State Parks) 8 ft from the ground. Red or orange, minimum 6" × 12". Required on all motorized vehicles in the dunes.
Little Sahara (BLM, Utah) 8 ft above level ground. Red or orange. Required on all OHVs.
Silver Lake (Michigan DNR) 10 ft off the ground at standstill (8 ft under motion). Safety orange, solid material — mesh is not allowed. Minimum 5" × 10", rectangular only, no triangles. Sit-in vehicles must mount the flag to the front-most portion of the vehicle.
Silver Lake is the strict one, and it's the one to check before you load the trailer. It's the only park here that regulates where on the vehicle the flag goes, and a Wrangler counts as "sit-in automotive style seating" — so the rule points to the front-most portion of the Jeep, not the tailgate. If Silver Lake is on your calendar, confirm your placement with the park first, and look at a bumper or light-bar mount such as our universal roll bar accessory mount, which clamps to any round tube from 1.5" to 2".
A note on flag color
The posted rules at the parks above call for red or orange, and Silver Lake specifies safety orange. Out on the sand you'll see plenty of bright colors flying — what matters most is that people can see you coming.
If you're riding somewhere that checks at the gate, orange is the safe bet: that's the orange Jeep kit. The yellow one is the same Jeep artwork, same pole, same hardware, and it's plenty loud on the trail. Either way, run something bright.
Which pole should a Jeep owner run?
All three lengths — 57" Shortie, 81" and 103" — are available on both the orange and yellow Jeep kits. Pick your length at checkout.
Each kit ships with the alloy folding pole and quick-disconnect coupler, the stainless mounting stud, the flag, and a storage sleeve. You'll want the matching JL or JK mount with it if you don't already have a mounting point.
81" is the do-everything choice on a Wrangler. From either mount it clears the 8-foot western parks with room to spare and still meets Silver Lake's 10-foot standstill rule. The 57" Shortie clears 8 feet from both mounts — but on a JK that's only by three inches, so if your Jeep sits stock and you want margin, go up. The 103" is for when you want to be seen from the far side of a bowl.
Gladiator, older Jeeps, and everything else
Jeep Gladiator (JT) — different rear end from the Wrangler. Use a clamp-style mount on a bar or rack rather than assuming the JL bracket fits.
TJ, YJ and older — no matching factory bolt pattern. The universal roll bar accessory mount clamps to any 1.5"–2" round tube at any angle and is the usual answer.

Installing it
Hand tools, about five minutes:
JL — back off the upper tailgate hinge bolts. JK — back off the top two bolts on the spare tire carrier.
Set the bracket over the factory holes, with the spacers behind it to protect the paint.
Snug it down with the supplied stainless hardware.
Drop the mounting stud into the 9/16" hole.
Click the pole onto the coupler.
The quick-disconnect is what you'll appreciate at the end of the day. The pole comes off without tools, folds down, and goes in the sleeve — so it isn't catching a garage door or a drive-through on the way home, and it isn't rattling loose in the back.

How tall does my flag have to be? Eight feet from the ground at Glamis, Sand Hollow and Little Sahara. Ten feet at standstill at Silver Lake. A stock JL mount sits 44 inches up and a stock JK 42 inches, so an 81" pole puts you over 10 feet on either one.

A flag isn't decoration on the sand. It's the only thing telling the machine coming over the crest that you're on the other side of it. Get the height right, get the color right, and go enjoy the day.
