When to Replace Your Whip Flag — and How to Do It in a Minute

Quick answer: Replace your flag when the colour has faded, the edges have started to fray, or it's torn. Sun is what kills them — and a sun-faded flag can quietly put you out of compliance, because dune parks require a flag that's genuinely red or orange. The reason to care isn't looks
A flag that's gone pale pink or washed-out amber isn't just tired. It may no longer meet the rule.

The safety argument is the same argument. The whole point is being visible over a crest to someone closing fast. A faded flag is a quieter signal than a bright one.
When to swap it
Give it a look at the start of the season:
Faded colour. Hold it next to a new one. Sun fade happens gradually enough that you stop noticing it.
Frayed trailing edge. Flags wear from the free edge inward — that end takes the most flapping.
Tears or missing corners. Once it starts, wind finishes it fast.
A stretched or torn grommet. That's the anchor point; if it goes, you lose the flag.
Stiff or brittle fabric. UV breaks the material down. It'll tear at the first hard run.
If you ride a lot of sun and a lot of miles, an annual swap is a reasonable rhythm. A flag is the cheapest part on the machine.
How to replace it
This is the part people are surprised by. There's no glue and no hardware:
Snip the zip-tie holding the flag to the pole.
Slide the old flag off the pole.
Slide the new flag on.
Run a new zip-tie through the grommet at the bottom of the flag and the anchor on the pole.
That's it. A minute, and one zip-tie.

What else wears out
The flag goes first, but it isn't the only part with a life:
