Dune Flag Requirements by Park: Height, Color and Size Rules

Quick answer: Almost every major dune park in the country requires a safety whip that reaches 8 feet from the ground, topped with a red or orange flag at least 6" × 12". Silver Lake in Michigan is the strict exception — it wants 10 feet at standstill and solid safety orange. The detail that catches people out is that the rule measures your flag from the ground, not the length of your pole. Your mount already sits several feet up, and every inch of it counts.
The mistake that gets people turned around at the gate
"The park says 8 feet, so I need an 8-foot pole."
You almost certainly don't. The requirement is measured from the ground to the tip of your mast — not the length of the pole you bought.
Your mounting point is already up in the air. On the rigs we build mounts for, measured stock:
Ford Bronco (2021+), trail sights up front — 51 inches off the ground
Jeep Wrangler JL (2019+), tailgate hinge — 44 inches
Jeep Wrangler JK (2007–2018), tire carrier — 42 inches
So a 57" Shortie on a Bronco stands 9 feet tall. On a JK it's 8 feet 3 inches. Both clear the 8-foot rule, and neither needed an 8-foot pole to do it.
Height of your mount above the ground + pole length = your flag height
Run a tape from the ground to your mounting hole, add the pole, and compare it to the park. Bigger tires and a lift raise the number; a bumper or roll-bar mount lowers it. Ten seconds with a tape measure settles it.

Glamis — Imperial Sand Dunes (BLM, California)
8 feet from the ground to the mast tip. Red or orange flag, minimum 6" × 12". Pennant, triangle, square or rectangle all accepted. The flag must sit within 10 inches of the tip of the mast, with club flags mounted below the safety flag or on a separate whip.
Oceano Dunes / Pismo (California State Parks)
A whip is any pole, rod or antenna securely mounted to the vehicle extending at least 8 feet from the surface of the ground — and it must stand upright when the vehicle is stopped. Flag solid red or orange, minimum 6" × 12", within 10 inches of the top.
Dumont Dunes (BLM, California)
8 feet from the ground to the mast tip, and the whip must stand completely upright when the vehicle is stationary. Red or orange, minimum 6" × 12".
Sand Hollow (Utah State Parks)
8 feet from the ground. Red or orange, minimum 6" × 12". Required on all motorized vehicles in the dunes.
Little Sahara (BLM, Utah)
Minimum 8 feet above level ground. Red or orange. Required on all OHVs — they'll sell you one at the gate if you turn up without.
St. Anthony Sand Dunes (BLM, Idaho)
Minimum 8 feet above level ground, brightly coloured flag, minimum 6" × 12".
Silver Lake (Michigan DNR) — the strict one
10 feet off the ground at standstill (8 feet under motion). Safety orange, solid material — mesh is not permitted. Minimum 5" × 10", rectangular only, no triangles. And it's the only park on this list that regulates where the flag goes: sit-in vehicles — trucks, Jeeps, Broncos, anything with automotive seating — must mount the flag to the front-most portion of the vehicle. Straddle-seat machines mount at the rear.
If Silver Lake is on your calendar, plan for it specifically. It is not the same rulebook as the western parks.

The part about the flag itself
Height gets all the attention, but the flag is regulated too, and it's where people quietly fall short:
Color. Red or orange nearly everywhere. Silver Lake specifies safety orange in solid material. A club flag, a novelty flag or a faded flag doesn't satisfy the rule on its own — fly it below your safety flag or on a second whip.
Size. 6" × 12" is the common minimum. Silver Lake's is 5" × 10".
Shape. Most parks accept pennant, triangle, square or rectangle. Silver Lake accepts rectangles only.
Placement. Glamis and Oceano both want the flag within 10 inches of the tip. A flag flying halfway down the pole doesn't count.
Mesh. Silver Lake prohibits it outright.
Mount it upright, not raked back
Oceano and Dumont both write this into the rule: the whip has to stand upright when the vehicle is stopped. That's about mounting angle — the whip needs to sit vertical, not leaned back at a slant.
It's worth knowing for a second reason. An angled whip is shorter than a vertical one. Rake an 81" pole back far enough and you lose real height off the ground — enough to quietly drop you under the requirement even though the pole itself is plenty long. Mount it vertical and the math above holds.
Our poles also fold down and stow in the sleeve when you're done, so you're not driving home with a whip catching every garage door and drive-through on the way.
So what should I actually buy?
Work it backwards from where your mount sits:
Riding the 8-foot parks — Glamis, Oceano, Dumont, Sand Hollow, Little Sahara, St. Anthony. From a Bronco trail sight or a Jeep tailgate mount, a 57" Shortie already puts you over 8 feet. On a JK it's 8 feet 3 inches, which clears but doesn't leave much room — go up if your Jeep sits stock.
Riding Silver Lake, or want one pole for everywhere — run the 81". From any of the mount heights above it puts you past 10 feet.
Mounting low, on a bumper, a bed rail or a quad rack — measure first. The lower the mount, the more pole you need. That's when the 103" earns its keep.

What is a whip flag? A safety whip is a flexible pole mounted to your vehicle with a bright flag at the top, so other riders can see you over a dune crest before they see your machine. Most dune parks require one.

Does my club flag count? Not on its own. Fly it below your safety flag, or on a separate whip.
Do I need a flag if I'm only on the trail, not the dunes? Requirements vary by land manager, and plenty of trail systems require one too. Even where it isn't mandatory, a flag is what makes you visible on a blind rise.
Be seen, be safe
The rules exist for one reason: on a dune, the machine coming over the crest can't see you until it's too late to do anything about it. Your flag is what gets seen first.
